Hull: Saturday-Monday

Saturday

Jayne had work in the morning, so I stayed in, sleeping in a nice, actually comfortable bed, and having a shower with water pressure! And being fed way too much by Jayne’s mom – that was a theme of the week. She would pile me with food, and then worry that I was starving. Also, I have discovered the most delicious cereal that America doesn’t have, and it’s a tragedy: Frosted Shreddies:

Basically, it’s like whole-wheat Chex and frosted…(Apparently I can order them on Ebay and have them shipped to the U.S. It’s tempting.)

Another amazing thing was my sandwich for lunch – regular ham and cheese, but with wheat bread and regular, mild cheddar cheese. For the Danish, “brown bread” is their rugbrød
. It’s extremely heavy, and I don’t really like the taste of the seeds. For the English, “brown bread” is good old wheat bread. I’ve become really sick of white bread, the only alternative to rugbrød.

Jayne’s mom drove me to meet Jayne at her work at the ice rink, and from there we went to the various museums of Hull. We didn’t take any of them terribly seriously, but that was the type of museums they were. Fun, a little cheesy, but with some cool stuff.

Afterward, we also stopped at a bakery. I got a tart, and Jayne got a brownie. I think our nationalities need to be swapped.

After an amazing home-cooked dinner, Jayne had invited some friends over to partake in a Sing Star and dance party – a.k.a. a game in which you dance and a game in which you sing for points. Jayne had four or five different versions of the game, but we started and ended with Disney – probably the best of them all. And, Johanna was there!

It was their Easter break as well, and they get three weeks off, so, sadly, a lot of my friends were off at their various homes. So, in the end, I only saw three of them…but the best three, of course, since they were around to see me ;-)

Sunday

The singing party had lasted fairly late into the night, so Jayne and I slept in late. I think it was the latest I’ve slept in in who knows how long…In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever slept in that late, but it was much needed, and I actually wasn’t that tired.

It was a lazy day. The most real activity we did was walk to Tescos and get me some groceries – most especially tea! And we saw the rows and rows of Easter chocolate and decided to go on a bit of a chocolate binge as well. Somehow this always seems to happen to me when I’m around Jayne…

I always marvel at what dogs find comfortable.

But am always melted by their eyes.

Monday

We made a daytrip to York! Jayne and I were accompanied by Jayne’s boyfriend Dom, and her two friends Alex and Sam. The weather was a little drizzly, but it appears that I can handle English weather better than the English can! Silly, people.

Enjoying our morning tea, in leaking cups.

The trip involved a little bit of shopping – the girls had really wanted to go, but they managed to restrain themselves, at least with clothes. However, with sweets it was a different story. In the Shambles, we hit an old-fashioned candy store, a chocolate store, and then later on, a fudge store, where a very convincing salesman convinced us to buy a boxed deal of fudge – meaning we each spent 4 pounds (rougly $6) on fudge. He really was a very good salesman. He was holding a sign that said “free samples” and as we walked by, he tapped it on the glass. Alex, in front, ran into the store, but if I hadn’t been the last in line, I would not have been far behind. Once inside, he gave us the samples and began talking to us. He was extremely hyped up on sugar, but I think that helped his salesmanship. My favorite part was when he asked where I was from, and then he responded, “What are you doing in MY country?” with an extremely astonished and confused face.

We did do sightseeing as well – we walked past the York Minster, on the walls, and past Clifford’s Tower. Had lunch in a pub, drank some tea, basically, were very English.
