Day 138 - May 18

While my time in Europe is still going strong (I’m here for just under three months more), my time in Copenhagen is nearing its end, as I’ll be using it only as a base camp while I jump from here to there in my epic-happy-21st-birthday-summer-European-extravaganza (I’ve decided that’s what this summer is – since I’m turning 21 on the 21st, as a kid that “Golden Birthday” seemed the ultimate birthday, and so that’s what I’ll make it). Thus, it’s been hard for me to not sometimes start thinking about everything I’ll miss and getting prematurely sad (hot chocolate, hearing the crazy language all around me, the amazing public transportation system, the Danish flag EVERYWHERE, pastries, and, most prominently friends – I’m guessing going from seeing them multiple times per week to long-distance communication only is going to be hard). So, I decided, instead of thinking of that, today I would make a list of things I was NOT going to miss.

1. My upstairs neighbor who has a weird obsession with karaoke, and whose favorite song is “My Heart Will Go On”.
2. Rugbrød – Danish “rye bread” is not an accurate description. It’s a food you either love or hate, and I am not of the love persuasion.
3. The godawful wind tunnel that is my bike ride to the city.
4. My room – it was always only a place of habitation, and never became my room, with its lack of photos, knick-knacks, and, most particularly, colorful bed sheets.
5. Gas stove tops and an oven with a mind of its own –I find myself longingly remembering StuVi’s amazing appliances.
6. The shower with non-existent water pressure – except for the occasional times when it decides one stream will have pressure, for a few days…
7. Expenses – when Starbucks at home seems amazingly cheap, you know there’s a problem.
8. Not being able to find random things in the supermarket – Denmark needs to learn about the usefulness of soup and flashcards.
9. The way-too-long lines in Bilka, and the fact that you have to walk all the way to the back of the store to get to the food.
10. The fact that my debit card and Denmark don’t get along (except in ATMs, thank God).
